Welcome back!
We have missed seeing each of your faces so much, even if it's been over the computer! It was quite a different spring break for both Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry as we imagine yours was also. Ms. Mack was going to go to San Diego and Ms. Terry was going to visit her friend and her friend's new baby in Wisconsin. Instead, we both stayed home, enjoyed time with our pups and did some reading, art and puzzles. ZOOM MEETS: Students will have the optional opportunity to do ZOOM “meets” with Ms. Mack to have authentic Chinese production time. If the links happen to change, we will contact you. Any assignments that we have posted are sometimes showing up and sometimes not. The district is aware. Pearson Realize is aware. There is a ticket in for this glitch to be fixed. Until then, ignore Pearson Realize assignments (and know they will not count against your student). This week's online learning opportunities include: ELA: This week, our story is titled "Tippy-Toe Chick Go!." The story is about a little chick who helps her family solve a problem. We are starting unit 5 which is all about what a difference a great idea can make. This story is an animal fantasy story. We will be working on recognizing the characters, the setting and the plot of the story. This week, our phonics focus is /ow/ and the final syllable –le in words. CHINESE: We are continuing unit 10 this week and will be reading, writing, and using the following characters in oral language practice: 几 how many, 年 year, 星期 week. We will continue to review the following characters from previous units: 来 come, 去 go, 走 walk, 田 field, 今today, 昨 yesterday, 明 tomorrow, 是 is (to be), 日 sun/day, 月 moon/month, 天 sky, 生 life/to be born, 男 boy, 女 girl, 土 dirt, 雨 rain, 马 horse, 牛 cow, 鸟 bird, 羊 sheep, 虫 insect. MATH: In unit 11 we will practice using models and strategies to subtract tens.

We want to take a moment to thank each of you for your patience and appreciation this week as we start to adjust to our online learning formats. It has been a steep learning curve for us as teachers and we know it has been challenging for many students and families as well. THANK YOU for persevering and for remaining optimistic. All of us will be technology experts by the end of this experience!
Starting Monday April 13th, we will be sending notifications and updates primarily through Canvas, and not through Dojo. In order to keep you all in the loop, we are asking for at least one parent from each family to follow the steps below to become an observer of your student on Canvas. Going through these steps will help you stay connected to your student's academic activity on Canvas, and will also allow you to receive important announcements from Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry. After you connect to your student on Canvas, please make sure that you have notifications turned on in your Canvas settings! Turning on your notifications will greatly ease communication between teachers and parents. Thank you for supporting your student in their online learning endeavors and for being so supportive of us as teachers. Please continue to adapt all online learning materials to best meet the needs of your student and your family during this difficult transition. We are so appreciative of each one of you! Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry Hi Parents,
We want to share with you what we know will be occurring for the foreseeable future during this school dismissal. Starting Tuesday, Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry will have our Canvas courses available to students. This will be the first time our students are using Canvas. Both teachers have done their best to make sure that it is easy to navigate. The district will be providing tools to help you learn also. Please use the tools provided as it will help ease the learning curve for you as it has for us. Ms. Terry has also sent each parent their student’s login information. Ms. Terry will also be sharing with you a quick “How to Login” document (see below) so you will be able to identify what to use for each site. We understand that this is a lot which is why we have tried to make it as simple as it can be for you. Please note that we won’t be using the flipgrid badge as the students should be able to login via clever. Here are the expectations that we understand; as of now:
We love each one of our students and have kept each one in mind as we have spent many hours creating learning opportunities online. We know that this is a learning curve for many of us (teachers included) and we appreciate the patience and flexibility as we all navigate this school dismissal period. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help assist you during this time. Best, Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry Good Morning and Happy Monday!
We miss all of you so much! We think of you all day, every day. We hope that you are staying healthy, safe and happy! There is not a NEW packet. It is the same packet that you either picked up from the school or printed off. Mrs. Winfree sent out the Ridgecrest Roar and had some information regarding technology in it! If your student needs technology to help do online learning opportunities, please reach out to Ms. Mack or Ms. Terry! The school is open until 3 today for parents to check out the technology! LIVE VIDEO CHATS This week, we are going to start something exciting! Last week Ms. Terry did a google meets with a lot of our classmates and it was a lot of fun. We've decided to start doing that EVERY DAY! But it will be a little different. We will have PURPLE class meet at 1:00 and GREEN class meet at 1:30! This will give each teacher a chance to pop in and say hi! We will post the links below for parents as well as on DOJO. For some of this week, Ms. Terry and Ms. Mack will be doing the chats together so everybody knows how it works and what to expect. We know that it is important to have authentic Chinese production so when Ms. Mack is the only teacher in the chatroom, guess what can only be spoken? CHINESE! How fun will this be? Sometimes, we will read a story. We may just talk about our day so far. We may even do art again. But what Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry really care about is seeing each of your faces! Here are the links: PURPLE CLASS: To join the video meeting, click this link: https://zoom.us/j/964796736 Meeting ID: 964 796 736 GREEN CLASS: To join the video meeting, click this link: https://zoom.us/j/430631860 Meeting ID: 430 631 860 Home Learning Opportunities We've had a few parents reach out regarding home learning opportunities. At this time, we are not giving any additional assignments or projects. This week should be focused on review, with the option to utilize the resources put out by Canyons School District in the form of the packet that was sent out last week. Both Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry have added additional resources to the blog (previous post as well as under the tabs at the top). We will continue to add resources for parents to use. Ms. Terry just recently added a new activity packet titled "First Grade Home Learning Packet" on the drive (link provided in the English Language Arts tab). Please remember that these home learning opportunities are all review and to be used in the way the best suits your student's needs! Over the next two weeks, school will look a little different. At home learning opportunities will be made available either digitally or you may pick up a hard copy from school on Thursday from 8-3. During this time, both Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry will be available for questions, talks, video conferencing, messages, and anything that will help the students continue to feel connected to school. Here is a phone number to get ahold of Ms. Terry: 801-826-9265. Here is a phone number to get ahold of Ms. Mack: 801-826-9271. These are both our school numbers that we have forwarded to our cell phones. We are still learning how to return a phone call from that number so if we miss your phone call, we will get back to you as an "unknown number." We thank you in advance for your patience as we get the hang of this new setup! The optional "at home learning opportunities" are all review of material we have previously covered in school since the beginning of the year. Each activity is a review of skills students have learned and practiced in the classroom. As we have shared since the beginning of the school year, you are more than welcome to enrich or adapt these activities. Do what is best for you and your family during this time. Please let us know if you have questions regarding how to adapt or enrich--we are more than willing to share ideas and tips! A Note From Ms. Terry: In addition to the district provided learning materials, I know that many students (and/or parents) may want additional review options. Under the English Language Arts tab at the top of this page, I have added other optional items. There is also a link to go to my google drive. In the google drive folder, there is reading street flashback reviews from unit 1 all the way until unit 4.6 (but please don't do 4.6 as we haven't learned this material yet). There is also a folder in there, it is mainly English Language Arts but there are color pages, math pages, ideas for writing. I've also added the District provided packet PDF. My main goal is to help you however you need my help during this time. If you have a desire for something else to be added, let me know and I will add it. But please remember, these are all optional and to be used however you wish. Here are a few simple ideas that I shared with my friend who also has a first grader: Bumping reading out loud minutes to 20. When increasing reading stamina, take turns since this may be a challenge for your student. Maybe it starts out with taking turns at 5 minutes or maybe a parent reads 2 minutes to the students 8 minutes and then repeats the pattern. Do what is best for your student. When reading, parents can ask different comprehension questions : What happened at the beginning (but big idea of the beginning), middle and end? Who are the characters? Where is the setting? What is the theme ? For writing, students can write little stories. They can write about the day before, their favorite holiday, their best friend, their favorite food, what they read about or anything that intrigues them, I just would love to see them continuing to write. If students want to share what they wrote with me, they can send me a video of them reading it or even a picture! Remind them to check for capitals at the beginning of the sentence, finger spaces between words and punctation at the end of the sentence! Students who love to draw can also draw a picture then write about what they drew! For math review: Simple addition and subtraction facts are always wonderful to review. The students can also do addition and subtraction with double digit numbers without regrouping (90-10) or (45+46) they can draw models to add it, add the ones first, circle the 10 ones, then add the tens up and the leftover ones). You can also work with your student on skip counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s starting from anywhere between 0-100 (for example, skip count by 2 starting at 32: 32, 34, 36, etc.). A Note from Ms. Mack: All stories for units 1-9 are in the online Mandarin Matrix library. As the next two weeks will be focused on reviewing previously covered materials, I would love for students to review the stories currently available in their Mandarin Matrix library. Students can push a play button and hear the story read to them, read along with the recording, or read independently. It would be especially beneficial if students would read OUT LOUD. Using the audio recording to hear the sentences read out loud can support their reading and comprehension if they forget a character.
At the end of every story, students can practice answering comprehension questions, writing characters, and matching phrases or characters to pictures that represent their meaning. If you have other children in your home who speak Chinese, I would love for you to encourage them to speak Chinese together for an allotted amount of time each day (it is entirely up to you to determine what is feasible for your family). You may also want to have FaceTime or Skype hangouts with other students in the class and let them practice speaking Chinese together! Keep an eye out on Dojo as I will be posting short videos in Chinese to continue engaging with students during this period of school closure. I am also adding more YouTube videos to the "Chinese Information" portion of this blog. You can find this tab at the top of the blog page, or click on the button below to take you directly there! I will add links for songs students have already learned, as well as episodes of TV shows with Mandarin soundtracks and even some new songs they can listen to and learn. For those with Netflix accounts, many Netflix original TV shows have a Mandarin soundtrack so students can watch familiar stories in Chinese! IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Here is the link if you want to sign up! :) http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer *** REMINDER: Please continue to check Class Dojo to monitor your student's progress in not speaking English. Ms. Mack will usually give two reminders before taking away a Dojo point, so if you see a mark on there, you know that they have already been reminded three times. We know through research and experience that students will make the greatest advances in their Chinese language development if they are speaking as much Chinese as possible! **** WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: This week, we are starting unit 4! Unit 4 is all about treasures. This week, in particular, we are talking about how a surprise can be a treasure. We have been talking about how we cherish certain things—Ms. Terry has mentioned how she cherishes a model car because it reminds her working on corvettes with her dad. Our story is a realistic fiction story titled “Mama’s Birthday Present.” We are learning about the digraphs ai and ay. We’ve learned that ai comes in between consonants t-r-AI-n and ay comes at the end of the word- r-AY! We are also diving in and working on learning about adjectives and what adjectives to use when describing a noun. Next week, we are on Unit 4 Week 2. The story will be Cinderella! We are focusing on recognizing the theme of the story as well as learning about fairy tales. We will be focusing on the diagraph /ea/ in words like beach and ease. We will also be talking about how a story can be a treasure. This weekly question is going to be a fun one as we are working on our class books! We will continue to talk about adjectives. We are making great strides in Lexia and both classes are doing extremely well on meeting their minutes! Great job, First Graders! :) MATH: Continuing with unit 9 in math this week, students will compare two-digit numbers. We have been practicing 1 more, 1 less; and 10 more, 10 less. Families are encouraged to attend and participate in fun Chinese crafts and activities, eat Chinese food, and best of all: watch your students perform! Each grade level will be performing different songs, demonstrations, or skits. Please join us in celebrating the most important holiday in Chinese culture! If your child already owns traditional Chinese clothing, they are welcome to wear it to the event. If not, we are asking dual immersion students to wear yellow and red, which are auspicious colors in Chinese culture. If your student does not already own either traditional Chinese clothing OR yellow or red clothes, THAT IS PERFECTLY FINE! We are NOT requiring anyone to purchase special clothing for this event. 100 Days: We are going to be celebrating the 100th Day of school on FEBRUARY 3rd! Please do not worry about having your student write the 51 other students’ names on the valentines, just make sure their own names are on the valentines they will hand out. We do not have detailed information about the party quite yet, but as soon as we do we will send out an email. Parent Teacher Conferences: Dual immersion conferences will be held February 24th, 26th, and 27th. Please read the Ridgecrest Roar for more information about available time slots and how to sign up for conferences! WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: This week, our story is titled "I'm a Caterpillar." It is a literary nonfiction story. We will be working on a tricky pattern this week. It's the er, ur, ir pattern. Last we we learned the "ar" pattern and then the week before, we learned the "or" and "ore" pattern. Due to the complexity of practicing and mastering this phonics pattern, we are not doing challenge words or dictation sentences. Please feel free to challenge your student and work on applying this pattern to other words. We will be working on fact and opinion also! J CHINESE: We will finish unit 6 of Mandarin Matrix and will be starting unit 7! Students will able to bring their workbooks home that we have been using since August--can you believe how far they have come? It's amazing to think that just a few months ago, they were learning to count to ten, and now they are writing and speaking in full, complete sentences! What incredible students they are! In unit 7 we will read a new story called "Whose Birthday Cake?". Students will practice reading and writing the following two new characters: day/date, month. We will be practicing the following language features: "Today is/Tomorrow is/Yesterday was. . . ," “Whose is this?,”Who wants. . .?,” “. . . wants/does not want . . . “, “give me... .” MATH: We are finishing up unit 8 and jumping into unit 9 in math this week. SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES: In science and social studies, students will continue to learn about Chinese New Year traditions, activities, and symbolism. Purple and green class will be getting together to practice the group song for our Chinese New Year performance. Students will also review previous science and social studies topics. |
TeachersMs. Terry and Ms. Mack are so excited for this year! In Ms. Terry's class, students will speak, read, and write in English. In Ms. Mack's class, students will be speak, listen, read, and write in Chinese. Archives
