IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We are on the downhill slope to the finish line of first grade! If we counted correctly, there are about 33 days left of school (including Monday). The end of the year is approaching quickly, and we will be sharing the end of year events on the blog in the upcoming weeks. This week, we have our Spring School Concert! :) Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry will be in a meeting Thursday morning. Remind your students that behavior is still the same even though there are subs in their classroom. We will return after lunch. Bring your folder daily to school! FIELD TRIP: The first grade field trip is coming up! The date is May 16th. We will send home a small permission slip for students to attend the field trip. Please look out for the permission slip this week and send it back to school with your student as soon as possible! The story is about a little chick who helps her family solve a problem. We are starting unit 5 which is all about what a difference a great idea can make. This story is an animal fantasy story. We, as a class, will be talking about how problems need clever solutions which connects perfectly to what Ms. Mack is doing with recycled robots. We will be working on recognizing the characters, the setting and the plot of the story. This week, our phonics focus is /ow/ and the final syallable –le in words. Our Spelling Words: brown, growl, now, down, how, clown, cow, crowd, frown, town, never** and eyes** Challenge words: tower, cowboy, powerful, shower, and downtown Chinese: We will continue reinforcing the characters and language features of unit 1: 我 (I/my), 你 (you), 们 (plural noun marker), 可以 (can/able to), 好 (good/excellent). Students will also begin learning characters and grammar from unit 2: 朋友(friend), 的(possessive particle), 哪 (how/which/where), 这 (this/these), 吗 (question particle for "yes-no" questions). Math: Students are beginning unit 13 (Time) on Monday! Unit 14 is geometry and we are needing donations of marshmallows and wooden toothpicks. We will be creating geometric shapes! This is always a hit and we are excited for this upcoming unit! Science and Social Studies: Students are enjoying watching our classroom caterpillars continue to eat and eat and grow! We will continue discussing the life cycle of butterflies, and will also spend some time talking about caring for the earth in honor of earth day. On Monday, students will have the opportunity to make their own "Recycled Robots." Students should bring materials to build their own robots such as cardboard boxes, empty containers or bottles, magazines, or other recycled materials. Students may also bring markers to decorate their robots, if they wish. Please make sure that all materials are clean and dry. Ms. Mack will provide some materials for students to share (cardboard boxes, glue, tape), but the materials will be shared between the two classes. Chinese Summer Camp: The University of Utah’s Confucius Institute is hosting an intensive, week-long Chinese summer camp in July at several locations, including Ridgecrest! Students will participate in a two hour language class in the morning, and receive a cultural lesson in the afternoon with guest teachers from China. Dual immersion students who will be in 2nd through 8th grade this coming school year are welcome to enroll! Please see previous blog for link.
