We want to take a moment to say thank you to all of our fabulous parents and grandparents! We truly love each one of your students and enjoy working with them each day. Their growth is astounding and we are so honored to know this group of first grade dual immersion students! A note about sleep: We are having many students coming to school sleepy and tired. As a result, we are recognizing that those sleepy students are chattier, easily bored, and not as engaged in their learning. Please help your student get to bed on time so that their learning is maximized! FIELD TRIP UPDATE: The first grade field trip is coming up! The date is May 16th. We have had a lot of parents ask if they can meet us down there. The answer is: YES! We would love to have you meet us down there. If you are planning on meeting us at the museum, you are still required to sign up as a volunteer through Canyons School District. Here is the link: https://foundation.canyonsdistrict.org/index.php/volunteer. Volunteers who are meeting the first grade classes at the museum will need to arrange their own travel to and from the museum, and will have to pay for their own entrance. We will ensure that parents or family volunteers will be in the same group as their students. We are so excited for this field trip--it is seriously one of the best field trips the teachers have been on, including the ones that we went on as students ourselves ;) HOMEWORK: Homework will be sent home on Monday and students may return it for feedback on Friday. LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Egg Roll, Mini Corn Dogs or Chef Salad Wednesday: Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich, Cheesy Nachos, or Tuna Sandwich Thursday: Dutch Waffle, Chicken Nuggets or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Rippers, Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Whole Grain Soft Pretzel, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: BBQ Personal Pizza, Mini Corn Dogs or Chef Salad WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: This week our story is titled “Mole and the Baby Bird.” The question of the week is: How can we look at things in a different way? We will be talking and thinking about what is fair, thinking about how others may feel, listening to what others say and learning from our own experiences. The story is an animal fantasy. We will be working on drawing conclusions and building our background knowledge. Our phonics patterns will be ow, ou again this week. We will also be working on the syllables v/cv and v/cv. Our spelling words will be /ou/ this week. We are working on learning and using pronouns correctly. Some ways we will be achieving our learning objectives is through oral tasks, partner talks, increasing our opportunities to respond and using our whiteboards. We also will be using pipe cleaners to write our spelling words. We also have been increasing the amount of time we read each day. We are working on making sure we are reading each day for at least 12-15 minutes through partner reading, group reading and even silent reading. Our Spelling Words: mouth, house, found, our, out, cloud, ouch, shout, round, count, should**, and loved** Challenge words: doghouse, bounce, loudly and sprout Chinese: Students have moved on to the second unit of second grade material! Math: The students started the math unit on time last week. They are doing a great job! They are learning the hour and minute hands. They will be working on recognizing time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock. They will also be working on addition and subtraction review to keep their math fact skills up and running! Science and Social Studies: All of our caterpillars will be moving into the chrysalis stage and then we will be waiting for the butterflies to emerge! We are starting to talk about the life cycle of butterflies this week, and will also talk about changes other animals experience in the spring. This week's secret word is actually an affirmation! If students tell either teacher the phrase: "I can do hard things", they will receive a prize. Students should be able to say this phrase in Chinese, too :) Chinese Summer Camp: The University of Utah’s Confucius Institute is hosting an intensive, week-long Chinese summer camp in July at several locations, including Ridgecrest! Students will participate in a two hour language class in the morning, and receive a cultural lesson in the afternoon with guest teachers from China. Dual immersion students who will be in 2nd through 6th grade this coming school year are welcome to enroll! We are on the downhill slope of first grade with only 8 weeks! It seems like time is flying by! Spring fever is in full force! We are noticing that behavior is “off” and we have implemented behavior charts in each class. Students can add "jelly beans" to the jar in Ms. Mack's room when they are on-task, respectful, responsible, and speaking Chinese. Once they add 20 jelly beans, they may draw out an incentive from a folder of incentives we brainstormed together. The behavior reward can range from tiger prides, a game, 2 minutes extra of recess, a small treat, etc. In the 3 days that we have been doing this, we have noticed a big change in the behavior already! The students are enjoying the new incentive and their teachers are thankful for the hard work they are doing to improve their behavior! Toys at school: Many students have started bringing toys to school. The toys are a distraction during class, and are causing some problems at recess. Please remind your student that toys need to stay at home! Missing book buddies: Several stuffed animal "book buddies" have gone missing from Ms. Mack's room. The following Ty Beanie Babies are missing: a giraffe, a ladybug, a kiwi bird, and a green bear with a soccer ball on its chest. Please check in with your student to see if they accidentally brought one home. There will be no consequence if students return the animals. We want to keep them in the classroom, so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy them. Thank you!
