Our story is titled "The Big Blue Ox" It is an animal fantasy story. We will be talking about the characters and setting of the story. We will be working on being able to visualize what is happening in the story. We will be working on our short /o/ sound as well the plural -s and consonant s /z/. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday! We have been doing 3 of the challenge words as well as one of the dictation sentences! Everyone is attempting to do them but they are not counting against the student's demonstration of mastering the phonics skill of the week. We will also be working on writing complete sentences and being able to identify the predicates of sentences. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. ***Turn in your September Reading Calendar!*** A new one is coming home on Monday for October! CHINESE: The students are still working on the first unit for Mandarin Matrix. They will continue to practice and learn the Chinese characters for numbers 1-10. Students will have some writing practice sent home as part of the weekly homework so that they can continue to develop their writing skills. Special instructions for parents will be sent home to help you guide your student in writing Chinese even if you have never studied the language! Students will continue to review topics introduced at the beginning of the school year (family, friends, animals, clothing, animals, and colors). MATH: Students have started unit 2 and which is just an extension of unit 1. We are learning strategies for addition and subtraction strategies when working with numbers from 1-20. We have learned about counting on from a number already. We will learn about doubles, doubles plus one and doubles plus 2. Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! One way is to have your child read the math equations in Chinese. It’s going to be a great first week of October!

During the school day, we will be meeting in the library but after school conferences will be held in Ms. Terry’s classroom. With parent teacher conferences this week, Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry will be out of the classroom for 1 day and a half. Please help reinforce positive behaviors and following the classroom routines with your student! Both Ms. Mack and Ms. Terry had professional developments classes last week which both required a sub on separate days and the notes left from the subs indicated that students struggled to follow school rules. Our story is titled "Pig in a Wig" It is an animal fantasy story. We will be talking about the plot of the story as well as being able to summarize what happened in the story. We will be working on our short /i/ sound as well the consonant x/ks/. This week, the spelling words will be pretty simple for these bright students, again, so we will be practicing other words that follow the same pattern. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday! We will also be working on writing complete sentences and being able to identify the subject of the sentence. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We are learning more stations for our skill based instruction. This week, we will continue to be working on buddy reading and adding additional stations to the routine! We have been really successful with keeping our volume level at the appropriate volume but we are still working on staying focused with the station task at hand and completing it the whole task! CHINESE: This week, students are reviewing the topics covered in the first five weeks of school: family, friends, animals, clothing, and colors. Students will continue to focus on talking about animals they like and do not like, as well as what animals need and where they live. We are continuing our first writing unit which has 3 stories in it! We hope your students will feel confident and optimistic as they start to develop their writing skills. MATH: We will into topic 2 which is expanding on their understanding of addition and subtraction! The students are making great strides in counting to 10 in Chinese as well as recognizing math vocabulary in Chinese. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Don’t worry about completing pages or sending it back. We are moving forward and starting our first unit of reading street this week! Our question of the week is "What do pets need?" Our story is titled "Sam, Come Back!" It is a realistic fiction story. We will be working on our short /a/ sound as well as the consonant pattern -ck. Now, this week, the spelling words will be quite simple for these bright students so we will be practicing other words that follow the same pattern. This is one way that we will be challenging our talented, smart brains! A spelling list will be coming home with your child today! We will also be working on rhyming words and writing complete thoughts and sentences, remembering our capital letter at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We started doing lexia last week on the Chromebooks. The students are doing a wonderful job logging on and taking of their Chromebooks and headphones. The first time they logged on, it took 40 minutes. We are down to it taking less than 5 minutes to log on! It’s amazing how 5 days of practice will make such a big difference! CHINESE: This week, students are reviewing the topics covered in the first four weeks of school: family, friends, animals, clothing, and colors. Students will continue to focus on talking about animals they like and do not like, as well as what animals need and where they live. Most exciting of all: students will begin to learn characters this week! The first unit will cover the Chinese characters for numbers 1-10. Ask your students to share what they are learning with you! We hope your students will feel confident and optimistic as they start to develop their writing skills. MATH: We are still working on topic 1 in math which is addition and subtraction problems to 10. The students are making great strides in counting to 10 in Chinese as well as recognizing math vocabulary in Chinese. HOMEWORK: Homework is coming home today. Please feel free to enrich the homework if you would like. If it is too difficult, be adapt as needed. If you would like homework, please contact Ms. Mack. Toys at school: Several students have been bringing toys to school which is causing a bit of a distraction. If students are playing with toys in class, the toys will be kept at the teacher's desk until the end of the day. We discourage students from bringing toys to school because items frequently get misplaced or lost. Please remind your students to keep toys at home! Please also remind your students that if they have phone watches that they are not allowed to be texting or calling on them during the day. Thank you. Volunteering: We are working on getting a volunteer schedule/calendar out! Thanks to those who have contacted us about coming in to help out. Remember that if you are volunteering at the school, you must fill out a volunteer application at: volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org Class Dojo: Remember to sign up for Class Dojo! If you don't have your child's code, please let us know. It's a quick and fun way to see how your student is doing and even get some pictures here and there! If you look at your child's student report, you may see points awarded for positive behaviors or deducted for undesirable behaviors. Fundraiser: Keep up the great work! This is our one and only fundraiser! Please do your best to share it with family, friends and neighbors (that you know)! If 90% of first grade participates, we will have an awesome dance party with treats! The goal is that each student does their best and “raises” $50. Our overall goal for the school is $30,000. If we reach $30,000, Mrs. Winfree and Mrs. Cardon will SLEEP on the school roof one night! Each day there are special “contests” going on, look at your packet for individual details! We will be talking about what is around us at school and what can we see around our neighborhoods. We will be asking and answering questions about key details in text by reading a couple of stories. We will also be reviewing nouns, verbs and adjectives! We have been learning how to use our chromebooks and we will be working on lexia! This is one way that we are able to challenge and expand our knowledge! CHINESE: We have been working on colors all week and will continue to review them as we move on to animals and articles of clothing. If students have pictures of family pets or want to print out a picture of their favorite animal to bring to school on Wednesday September 12th, we will use them for an in-class activity. Your students are getting so good at introducing family members! We love having the family pictures up in our classroom. If you still have not sent a picture in, please do so ASAP. MATH: For math homework this week, students will review addition strategies (adding to, putting together, and solving for unknown addends). Students will continue to work on solving addition problems where both addends are unknown, as well as exploring strategies for subtraction problems (take from and compare situations). We are working to create additional challenges for students who are already very comfortable with basic addition and subtraction using numbers 1-10, but are emphasizing the development of students' abilities to talk about math in Chinese. We will be talking about short /o/ and short /e/. Our high frequency words that we will work on having committed to memory are: are, have, that, they, two, he, is, three, to, and with. We will be writing in our journals A LOT this week. We recognize that many students know pieces or even all of the review but due to the challenge of being in a Chinese speaking classroom, we are easing the cognitive load in the English side of the classroom for the rest of this week. Thank you for your support in this matter! :) CHINESE: Please send (or email) a family photo to school this week! This week students will learn and utilize vocabulary for colors, clothing/personal items, and friends. We will review vocabulary and sentence patterns from the previous week, emphasizing family members and practicing the sentence frames: "This is my...(mom, sister, brother, etc)." and "My family has (number) people." MATH: Students will work with various methods of addition and subtraction with numbers from 1-10. Students have done an amazing job remembering their numbers in Chinese and using them in our math practice problems last week. HOMEWORK: Reading 10 minutes a night.
