LUNCH CHOICES Monday: No School Tuesday: Mummy Dogs or Chef Salad Wednesday: Dutch Waffle, Nachos or Tuna Sandwich Thursday: Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich, Chicken Nuggests, or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Rippers, Bean and Cheese Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: This week is a REVIEW week! :) We will be reviewing all the skills and strategies that we have learned in Unit 1. We will be having a spelling test over the phonics skills that were covered in unit 1 but there won't be a list sent home. We are wanting to see the mastery of each student's phonics skills! We will be reviewing what the main idea is, where stories take place and well as the details of a story. We will review cause and effect. We will also be reviewing exclamatory sentences, interrogative sentences and declarative sentences. One of the ways that we will be reviewing is through an interactive games (jeopardy and games like "blurt") and even Socratic seminars! CHINESE: Students are continuing Unit 3 of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read a new story called "Sit Down," and review the stories "Amusement Park," and "Haircut." Students will practice key phrases including "Where is....?," "Who wants to sit here?," "He/she is sitting," "He/she isn't sitting," etc. Students will be able to read and write the characters "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在 (at/in), 里 (inside)," and we will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). MATH: We finished unit 2 at the beginning of last week and are well into unit 3! Students will learn strategies to help them do addition and subtraction using numbers from 1-20. We have been spending a lot of time practicing doubles (2+2, 3+3, 4+4) and near doubles (3+4, 5+6, 7+8). The students know songs about these in Chinese--ask them to sing them to you! Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: We will have English and Chinese reading fluency, beat the clock, spelling practice, Chinese character writing practice, and reading for 10 minutes. Please let us know if you have any questions! Please remember to adapt the homework if needed. If it needs to be more challenging, use the same procedure and use a more advanced text! 1. Student reads the entire passage to him/herself. 2. Students reads aloud the passage to the adult/parent, who is timing them for exactly ONE minute. During this time, the parent is also keeping track of (counting up) any errors the child makes while reading, BUT does NOT try to correct the child at this time. 3. Adult/Parent counts all the words read in ONE minute, then subtracts the amount student got incorrect and the difference is the words per minute. For example: I read 53 words TOTAL including all the errors I made and I made 6 errors throughout the passage. My “parent” would take 53 words minus 6 which equals 47 words per minute. (53-6=47) Our Winter goal is for oral reading fluency is 24+ words in 1 minute with accuracy of 75%.

Here is some more detailed information about Clever and Lexia!
Clever is the program we use that connects multiple websites to one login so the students do not have to learn multiple different logins. We've also made it even easier for our first graders and have the QR badges. In first grade, we are using Lexia Core 5. It is a great reading app that allows for enrichment for students who need that additional challenge and help for students who may be struggling. Ms. Terry has used it in her classrooms for 4 years and has seen amazing growth and progress when Lexia is used in addition to daily reading practice and instruction. There has been some troubles with using Lexia and we apologize about the complications. This is the first year using the QR badges! If you are using an iPad or a tablet, you need to download the clever app as well as Lexia. Have your student login through clever and then click "lexia." Remind them to not touch the screen (or else it may freeze requiring a whole restart). If you are using a computer, you just need to go to https://clever.com/in/canyons and click the QR badge button. Lexia Core 5 is not working on smart phones, yet (I checked last week to see). Let us know if you have any questions! IMPORTANT INFORMATION
