Happy Monday! The countdown begins! We have 2 full weeks and then a 3-day week left!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! Bring your folder daily to school! Ms. Mack is in need of volunteers to staple math pages in her class! It also allows for parents to see how a Chinese classroom works even though you may not have any Chinese language skills! Here is the sign up for Ms. Terry’s classroom: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer Please note that if your student is not in her classroom at the time, you are still able to volunteer and help with the other class. Many students are asking Ms. Terry about lexia and their badges not working at home. They will work but parents and students need to log in to the following website and then their badges will work.http://www.clever.com/in/canyons We do this every day via this log in method and it works like a charm! Please remember that if you want homework, Ms. Mack is sending it home weekly. If you would like your student to have Chinese and math homework, please contact Ms. Mack! Ms. Terry will be gone this week! Ms. Mack will be in the building all week if there are any questions. Ms. Terry will be back on Monday, the 10th. LUNCH CHOICES Monday: BBQ Rib Sandwich, Hamburger, or Grill Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Orange Chicken, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Wednesday: Canyons Chicken Bowl, Cheesy Nachos, Tuna Sandwich Thursday: Mac and Cheese, Chicken Nuggets, or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza, Bean and Cheese Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, or Grill Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Cheesy Chicken Quesadilla, Mini Corn Dogs, Chef Salad WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: This week, we are reading a story titled “Who Works Here?” It is an expository text. We will be using this text as well as other texts to talk and learn about author’s purpose. We will also be talking about who works to make our community a nice place. We will be talking about the community we live in, our school community and even our family community. Our phonics focus for the week is consonant digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph. We will also be learning the i_e pattern. Our conventions focus is special titles. We have started writing more each day! CHINESE: Students are continuing Unit 4 of Mandarin Matrix. Students will review the stories "Little Firefighters" and "Ant Guard." We will read a new story called "Monkeys Go On An Outing." Students will practice key phrases including "Here", "there", "none", "is there any?", "where is/are?", and "the most." Students will be able to read and write the characters "mountain," "person," "water", and "fire." They will continue to reinforce "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在 (at/in), 里 (inside)," and we will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). MATH: This week we will wrap up unit 5, and students will continue to practice new addition and subtraction strategies. As we begin unit 6, students will begin organizing and interpreting data. Some have stated that math is too easy for their child. Please remember that the "skill" of doing the math problems may be easy but they are learning how to talk about each math problem in Chinese. They are talking about the steps they did to solve the problem, the solution and even different ways that some may have gotten the sum or difference. While basic math skills are fundamental, the students are diving in and applying each math skill they know, building upon it as well as increasing their Chinese vocabulary. Please help reinforce the importance of what we are doing each day! One way to help improve the connection to what they are doing at school to home is to continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! SOCIAL STUDIES: This week students are focusing on weather, reviewing seasons, and reviewing school-related vocabulary (student, teacher, principal, classroom, eraser, marker, pencil, crayon, scissors, etc.) We are so proud of the hard work we are seeing from students in both English and Chinese classes. Keep up the awesome job, first graders!

Welcome to a "regular" schedule week! We have brainboosters on Tuesday and Wednesday!
We are having a "Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving Feast" on Tuesday November 20th! Parents, please help make this possible by sending in "Charlie Brown" like food items such as: toast (bread), popped popcorn, pretzels, jelly beans, craisins, etc! We did this last year and it was a HIT! The students talked about it all year :) We have napkins and plates already provided. We are excited for this activity! We are also going to be talking about manners during this feast. The students will even be learning these phrases in Chinese, like "please pass...", "no thank you", "I need....", etc. It will be a wonderful time! Please send donations in sooner than later :) Here is Ms. Terry's Volunteer Calendar: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer The dates go out until January in hopes of keeping it up to date! Please remember that the "skill" of doing the math problems may be easy but they are learning how to talk about each math problem in Chinese.
