Welcome to a "regular" schedule week! We have brainboosters on Tuesday and Wednesday!
We are having a "Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving Feast" on Tuesday November 20th! Parents, please help make this possible by sending in "Charlie Brown" like food items such as: toast (bread), popped popcorn, pretzels, jelly beans, craisins, etc! We did this last year and it was a HIT! The students talked about it all year :) We have napkins and plates already provided. We are excited for this activity! We are also going to be talking about manners during this feast. The students will even be learning these phrases in Chinese, like "please pass...", "no thank you", "I need....", etc. It will be a wonderful time! Please send donations in sooner than later :) Here is Ms. Terry's Volunteer Calendar: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer The dates go out until January in hopes of keeping it up to date! Thank you for all those who are volunteering in both classrooms! We really appreciate it! IMPORTANT INFORMATION School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! Bring your folder to school daily! Start saving pop can tabs! We are doing a school-wide contest. Whichever grade has the most pop can tabs (in weight) will win a small prize! We have changed our attendance incentive! Each class is working on building their own Mister Potato head! As soon as they build it, they will earn a mystery motivator that they have chosen (crazy socks, extra recess, pajama day, etc). Please help your student be at school by 8:40 so each class can earn their mystery motivator! Every Friday is Tiger Pride Friday! We try to wear our tiger pride shirts. If you don’t have one, a blue or orange shirt works! :) LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Mini Pepperoni Calzones, Hamburger, or Grill Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Breakfast Burritos, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Wednesday: Thanksgiving Menu (Oven Roasted Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Chicken Gravy, Stuffing) Thursday: Orange Chicken, Chicken Nuggets, or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Rippers, Bean and Cheese Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Walking Taco, Hamburger, or Grill Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Pork Chop, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Monday (November 26th): Corn Dog, Hamburger, Grilled Cheese Sandwich WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: We are starting a new unit this week! Our story is called “A Big Fish for Max.” The story is an animal fantasy story. Our comprehension skills that we will be working on are recognizing the sequence of the story and predicting and setting a purpose for reading. We will be focusing on thinking about what families do together. Our phonics focus will be the vowel sound in ball: a, al as well as the consonant digraphs sh and th. We will be writing friendly letters and learning more about common nouns. CHINESE: Students are continuing unit 3 of Mandarin Matrix. We will review the stories "Amusement Park" and "Haircut." We will read a new story called "Sit Down." Students will practice key phrases including "Who wants to do this?", "I want to", "I don't want to", "where is/are?", etc. Students are reinforcing the following characters: "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在 (at/in), 里 (inside)". MATH: We have finished unit 4 and are starting unit 5. Unit 5 is combining what students learned in units 3 and 4 and developing subtraction and addition strategies even further. This unit will continue to reinforce the relationship between addition and subtraction. Some have stated that math is too easy for their child. Please remember that the "skill" of doing the math problems may be easy but they are learning how to talk about each math problem in Chinese. They are talking about the steps they did to solve the problem, the solution and even different ways that some may have gotten the sum or difference. While basic math skills are fundamental, the students are diving in and applying each math skill they know, building upon it as well as increasing their Chinese vocabulary. Please help reinforce the importance of what we are doing each day! One way to help improve the connection to what they are doing at school to home is to continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! We are so proud of the hard work we are seeing from students in both English and Chinese classes. Students are working hard to speak Chinese only when they are in Ms. Mack's class. Please encourage them to do their best and to speak as much Chinese as they know! Keep up the awesome job, first graders!
