We have 20 school days in the month of October. At the end of the month, teachers will submit a list of students to Mrs. Winfree who have been at school for at least 18 days of the month (no more than 2 absences). There will be an incentive party on November 1st from 2:50-3:20 for all students who have made the attendance goal! UEA/FALL BREAK: No School on Thursday and Friday 10/18 & 10/19. We are connecting these new topics to our discussion from last week about wild animals that live in our neighborhoods. We will also be working on our reading comprehension, reading and writing poetry, and reading fluency. When we come back from fall break, we will be in unit 1 week 5 of our reading street unit. Our question of the week is "Which wild animals are in our neighborhoods" Our story is titled "Get an Egg" It is a realistic fiction story. We will be talking about the main idea and important ideas of the story. On Monday, we had an amazing discussion about habitats and even which animals hatch out of an egg. We even talked about what animals need to survive and what we need to survive. The students were amazing with our discussion! We will be working on our short /e/ as well as initial consonant blends. We learned a new small group station on Monday. We are using play-doh to spell our spelling words as well as other words that follow the same pattern. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday. We have been doing 3 of the challenge words as well as one of the dictation sentences. Everyone is attempting to do them but they are not counting against the student's demonstration of mastering the phonics skill of the week. We will also be working on writing poems. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We are learning more stations for our skill based instruction. We also are talking about interrogative sentences. CHINESE: We are continuing our introduction for Unit 2 of Mandarin Matrix this week as we review the characters from our first unit. Students will read a new story this week called Animal Tower. We will also review the new story from last week, entitled Dad's Chair. Students will make comparisons (big and little) and identify the location of objects/people in these stories (on top of/underneath). Students will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). In science, students will continue to learn about school communities. Who are the people we see in school? What do they do? What places and objects do we see in our schools? MATH: Continuing our work in unit 3, students will learn strategies to help them do addition and subtraction using numbers from 1-20. Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: As it is a short week with fall break, we will NOT have a homework packet sent out this week! We only have 3 days of school this week and we are going to make them count! Thank you parents for supporting your students and thank you first graders for being so amazing and responsible. Happy Fall Break!
