It is a literary nonfiction story. Our question of the week is: "What can we learn about wild animals by watching them?" Our focus in phonics is the short "u" sound and final consonant blends. We will also be talking about cause and effect. CHINESE: Students are starting Unit 3 of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read a new stories called "Amusement Park," and "Haircut." Students will practice key phrases including "Where is....?," "Who wants to sit here?," "He/she is sitting," "He/she isn't sitting," etc. Students will be able to read and write the characters "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在 (at/in), 里 (inside)," and we will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). MATH: We finished unit 3 last week and are starting unit 4! Students will learn strategies to help them do subtraction using numbers from 1-20. We have been spending a lot of time practicing doubles (2+2, 3+3, 4+4) and near doubles (3+4, 5+6, 7+8) which is a helpful strategy to subtract. The students know songs about these in Chinese--ask them to sing them to you! Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: We will have Chinese reading fluency, math, spelling practice, Chinese character writing practice, and reading for 10 minutes. Please let us know if you have any questions!
