We have 20 school days in the month of October. At the end of the month, teachers will submit a list of students to Mrs. Winfree who have been at school for at least 18 days of the month (no more than 2 absences). Our story is titled "A Fox and A Kit." It is an animal literary nonfiction story. We will be talking about the main idea and important ideas of the story. We will be working on our inflected endings –s and –ing. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday. We have been doing 3 of the challenge words as well as one of the dictation sentences. Everyone is attempting to do them but they are not counting against the student's demonstration of mastering the phonics skill of the week. We will also be working on writing personal narratives. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We are learning more stations for our skill based instruction. CHINESE: This week students will begin the second unit of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read two new stories this week focusing on the language features: "where is _______?", " is on top of ", " is underneath ". Students will review previously learned vocabulary (big, little, on top of, underneath, sheep, cow, bird, apple, dad, older brother, older sister, younger sister), and learn the following new vocabulary words: chair, apple tree, worm, birthday, They will be reviewing and practicing, apple tree, insects, bird, big, and little. We will continue to practice the Chinese characters for numbers 1-10. Students who are on the homework list will continue to have some writing and reading practice to reinforce these skills. Special instructions for parents have been sent home to help you guide your student in writing Chinese even if you have never studied the language before! Students will continue to review topics introduced at the beginning of the school year (family, friends, animals, clothing, animals, and colors). The students are also continuing to learn about school communities, focusing on people and their roles, places, and things inside schools. MATH: This week students continue with unit 2 which covers addition and subtraction strategies when working with numbers from 1-20. Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: Please ask Ms. Mack if you would like your student to be added to the homework list! Please remember to adapt the homework if needed. It’s going to be a great week!! Way to go, First Graders! We are so proud of all your hard work!

I think I missed something. What is the homework list? Is this optional, or by invitation from the teacher? Is it suggested to those that need extra practice, or by parents that like extra practice?
