IMPORTANT INFORMATION
School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! On Fridays, we get out of school at 1:40! Bring your folder daily to school! EVERY FRIDAY IS TIGER PRIDE DAY! Wear your tiger pride (or blue & orange if you haven’t received your 2019-20 school t-shirt yet)!!! Hands to self: In order to make our classrooms a safe and comfortable environment for all students, we teach students to follow our school rules of respect, responsibility, and safety by keeping their hands to themselves. This is a skill that all first graders need to work on, but we have noticed that it has been a particularly big struggle these first few weeks of school. Ms. Terry and Ms. Mack will usually not mark students down on Dojo until after several reminders have been given, but even so we are having to monitor, remind, and reteach students daily to keep their bodies in their own space. We have told students that if they continue to need many reminders, we will be contacting parents so that the positive behaviors can be reinforced at home as well. Thank you for supporting our school rules and for promoting a safe and comfortable classroom environment by practicing these social skills with your students! Toys at school: Several students have been bringing toys to school which is causing a bit of a distraction. If students are playing with toys in class, the toys will be kept at the teacher's desk until the end of the day. We discourage students from bringing toys to school because items frequently get misplaced or lost. Please remind your students to keep toys at home! Please also remind your students that if they have phone watches that they are not allowed to be texting or calling on them during the day. Thank you. Volunteering: Ms. Terry will send out a volunteer sign up in the coming weeks. Ms. Mack has already had some parents come to her room to staple and assemble math pages. Thanks to those who have reached out and are willing to come in! If anyone is interested in coming to help staple and sort math pages over the next couple of months, please email Ms. Mack! ([email protected]) Remember that if you are volunteering at the school, you must fill out a volunteer application at: volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org Class Dojo: Thanks to all those who have signed up for Class Dojo! If you don't have your child's code, please let us know. It's a quick and fun way to see how your student is doing and even get some pictures here and there! If you look at your child's student report, you may see points awarded for positive behaviors or deducted for undesirable behaviors. Fundraiser: Keep up the great work! This is our one and only fundraiser! Please do your best to share it with family, friends and neighbors (that you know)! If 90% of first grade participates, we will have an extra recess with popsicles! The goal is that each student does their best and “raises” $50. Our overall goal for the school is $30,000. If we reach $30,000, all the students will have a chance to silly string Mrs. Winfree and Mrs. Brush (AKA Ms. Megan, our first grade aide)! Each day there are special “contests” going on, please check the Ridgecrest PTA Instagram account for details! * PLEASE ALSO NOTE * the PTA is not able to accept payments via Venmo although the fun run fundraiser packet says that you can. Friday (9/13) is the fun run. PLEASE send your student in tennis shoes and comfortable clothes! The fun run is a great time! Picture Day is on 9/17. Substitutes on 9/10: Ms. Terry and Ms. Mack will be at a half day training the morning of September 10th. Please let your students know that we will be back in the afternoon, and that they should treat the substitutes with the upmost respect. Monday September 23rd from 9:00-3:30, Wednesday September 25th from 4:00-7:30, and Thursday September 26th from 9:00-12:00 and 2:00-7:30. Please check your student's backpack for a yellow sheet of instructions on how to sign up for conferences. Sign up as soon as you are able, as the time slots fill up quickly! LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Pulled Pork Sandwich, Hamburger, Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Orange Chicken, Mini Corn Dogs and Chef Salad Wednesday: Canyons Chicken Bowl, Nachos or Wow Butter and Jelly Sandwich Thursday: Cheese Stuffed Ravioli, Crispy Chicken Sandwich (spicy or regular) and Taco Salad Friday: Cheese (or Pepperoni) Pizza, Bean Burrito or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, Grilled Cheese Sandwich WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: We are starting our first week of Unit 1! We are going to be learning about the short /a/ sound as well as the final -ck in words and when to use it. We will be reading a story titled "Sam, Come Back!" We will be using our first grade journals for the first time this week. We will be working on complete sentences. Spelling words are coming home on Monday on yellow sheet of paper! :) CHINESE: We have been working on colors and articles of clothing all week and will continue to review them as we move on to animals. If students have pictures of family pets or want to print out a picture of their favorite animal to bring to school on Wednesday September 11th, we will use them for an in-class activity. Your students are getting so good at introducing family members! We love having the family pictures up in our classroom. If you still have not sent a picture in, please do so ASAP. MATH: For math homework this week, students will review addition and subtraction strategies (count on to add, doubles, near doubles, using a ten frame, adding in any order, counting back to subtract). Students will practice using addition to subtract and solving word problems with facts to 10. We are working to create additional challenges for students who are already very comfortable with basic addition and subtraction using numbers 1-10, but are emphasizing the development of students' abilities to talk about math in Chinese. Homework: The first homework is coming home on Monday September 9th. Please feel free to enrich the homework if you would like. If it is too difficult, be adapt as needed. If you would like homework, please contact Ms. Mack. Homework is usually sent home on Monday and can be returned on Friday for feedback. Students are not required to complete homework packets or even turn them in--that is entirely up to you! Here’s to an awesome week!
