School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! Early out is on Fridays. We get out at 1:40! Bring your folder daily to school! HALLOWEEN PARADE INFORMATION: The parade officially starts at 9:00! We do not usually make it out of the school until about 9:30. Reminder: No masks or weapons! Mrs. Winfree has already shared information about the contest in an email to parents and guardians, but here are the details once again: Teachers will keep track of daily attendance, taking attendance at 8:45 (students who come late will have their status changed from absent to tardy). Each time we fill a Mr. Potato head, we earn a reward. Once we earn 3 Mr. Potato heads, we earn a party of some sort (we have to decide as a class). Reminder: If your student misses less than EIGHT (8) days, they will be entered into a raffle to win a BIKE! FRIDAYS are always tiger pride days! Wear your tiger pride shirt, your fun run shirt or a blue or orange shirt. Students who wear tiger pride gear on Fridays get a special treat from the office! VETERAN’S DAY ASSEMBLY: This year the annual Veteran’s Day assembly will be on November 11th, 2019 at 9:15-10:00 am. Our story is called “A Big Fish for Max.” The story is an animal fantasy story. Our comprehension skills that we will be working on are recognizing the sequence of the story and predicting and setting a purpose for reading. We will be focusing on thinking about what families do together. Our phonics focus will be the vowel sound in ball: a, al as well as the consonant digraphs sh and th. We will be writing friendly letters and learning more about common nouns. CHINESE: Students are starting Unit 3 of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read a new stories called "Amusement Park," and "Haircut." Students will practice key phrases including "Where is....?," "Who wants to sit here?," "He/she is sitting," "He/she isn't sitting," etc. Students will be able to read and write the characters "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在 (at/in), 里 (inside)," and we will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). MATH: We finished unit 4 last week and are starting unit 1! Students will be learning more about addition and subtraction within story problems. We changed the order that we were working through our curriculum to better fit the needs of the students! Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: We will have Chinese reading fluency, math, spelling practice, Chinese character writing practice, and reading for 10 minutes. Please let us know if you have any questions!

We will be talking about the main idea and important ideas of the story. On Monday, we had an amazing discussion about habitats and even which animals hatch out of an egg. We even talked about what animals need to survive and what we need to survive. The students were amazing with our discussion! We will be working on our short /e/ as well as initial consonant blends. We learned a new small group station on Monday. We are using play-doh to spell our spelling words as well as other words that follow the same pattern. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday. We have been doing 3 of the challenge words as well as one of the dictation sentences. Everyone is attempting to do them but they are not counting against the student's demonstration of mastering the phonics skill of the week. We will also be working on writing poems. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We are learning more stations for our skill based instruction. We also are talking about interrogative sentences. CHINESE: This week students are in their 2nd unit of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read two new stories this week focusing on the language features: "where is _______?", " is on top of ", " is underneath ". Students will review previously learned vocabulary (big, little, on top of, underneath, sheep, cow, bird, apple, dad, older brother, older sister, younger sister), and learn the following new vocabulary words: chair, apple tree, worm, birthday, They will be reviewing and practicing, apple tree, insects, bird, big, and little. We will continue to practice the Chinese characters for numbers 1-10. Students have some writing practice sent home this week as part of the weekly homework so that they can continue to develop their writing skills. Special instructions for parents have been sent home to help you guide your student in writing Chinese even if you have never studied the language before! Students will continue to review topics introduced at the beginning of the school year (family, friends, animals, clothing, animals, and colors). The students are also continuing to learn about school communities, focusing on people and their roles, places, and things inside schools. MATH: This week, students continue with unit 4 which covers addition and subtraction strategies when working with numbers from 1-20. Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! It’s going to be a great week!! Way to go, First Graders!
