IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We are on the downhill slope to the finish line of first grade! If we counted correctly, there are about 27 days left of school. The end of the year is approaching quickly, and we will be sharing the end of year events on the blog in the upcoming weeks. This week, we don’t have any special events other than teacher appreciate week. We want to take a moment to say thank you to all of our fabulous parents and grandparents! We truly love each one of your students and enjoy working with them each day. Their growth is astounding and we are so honored to know this group of first grade dual immersion students! A note from the room moms: Dear Parents, As many of you know next week is teacher appreciation week. If you are interested in doing a group gift for Ms. Terry and/or Ms Mack there will be an envelope in each of their classrooms. Send any money with your student and Ms Terry/Ms Mack will put the money in that envelope. We will collect the money on Wednesday May 2nd. We will not be collecting at the end of the year. This group gift will combine teacher appreciation and end of the year gift for our amazing teachers. Teachers often get asked what they would prefer to receive for gifts. The feedback we have heard from teachers is they would like money/gift cards in order to buy things for their classrooms. Sending in money is completely voluntary. Thank you, Rachel Davis and Stephanie Ward (Room parents for Ms Terry and Mack) A note about sleep: We are having many students coming to school sleepy and tired. As a result, we are recognizing that those sleepy students are chattier, easily bored, and not as engaged in their learning. Please help your student get to bed on time so that their learning is maximized! Bring your planner and folder daily to school! We are having MANY students who are simply “forgetting” their planner at home. Please help them remember to bring it daily. FIELD TRIP UPDATE: The first grade field trip is coming up! The date is now May 15th. We have had a lot of parents ask if they can meet us down there. The answer is “YES!” We would love to have you meet us down there. If you are planning on meeting us at the museum, you are still required to sign up as a volunteer through Canyons School District. Here is the link: https://foundation.canyonsdistrict.org/index.php/volunteer. Volunteers who are meeting the first grade classes at the museum will need to arrange their own travel to and from the museum and will have to pay for their own entrance. We will ensure that parents or family volunteers will be in the same group as their students. We are so excited for this field trip--it is seriously one of the best field trips the teachers have been on, including the ones that we went on as students ourselves ;) HOMEWORK: Homework will be sent home on Monday and students may return it for feedback on Friday. Science and Social Studies: Both classes had a wonderful time making recycled robots last Friday (see Dojo for photos and video footage)! Thank you for sending materials with your students--we were so pleased at everyone's willingness to share what they had with their peers. All of our caterpillars have moved on to the chrysalis stage and we are now waiting for the butterflies to emerge! We are continuing to talk about the life cycle of butterflies this week, and will also talk about changes other animals experience in the spring. Chinese Summer Camp: The University of Utah’s Confucius Institute is hosting an intensive, week-long Chinese summer camp in July at several locations, including Ridgecrest! Students will participate in a two hour language class in the morning, and receive a cultural lesson in the afternoon with guest teachers from China. We are on the downhill slope of first grade! We have 8 1/2 weeks of first grade left! It seems like time is flying! Bring your planner and folder daily to school! Spring fever is in full force! We are noticing that behavior is “off” and we have implemented doing tally points in each class. You may have noticed there has been a big decrease in dojo points being assigned. This is because we are doing tally points in class. Every time the class reaches their tally point goal, they earn a behavior “reward.” The behavior reward can range from tiger prides, a game, 2 minutes extra of recess, a small treat, etc. In the 3 days that we have been doing this, we have noticed a big change in the behavior already! As we increase the desired behaviors, we will increase our tally goal! The students are enjoying the new incentive and their teachers are thankful for the hard work they are doing to improve their behavior! Volunteering: There are open slots to volunteer in Ms. Terry's room! Here is the link if you want to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer Ms. Mack also has open slots for volunteering! We have seen GREAT IMPROVEMENT in both the green and purple classes, but some students still need many reminders to only speak Chinese. Please reinforce the "Chinese only" policy at home and encourage your child to speak as much Chinese as possible when they are in Ms. Mack's class. You can look on Dojo to monitor your child's progress. Students are continuing to excel and expand their language skills--it is incredible to witness! Thank you for your continued support! WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: This week, our story is titled "Peter's Chair." The story is about a little boy who struggles with his "items" being used for the new baby. This week we are diving into unit one and starting to read and recognize the following characters: 我 (I/my), 你 (you), 们 (plural noun marker), 可以 (can/able to), 好 (good/excellent). Math: This week, students will finish unit 11 which focused on using a variety of strategies to subtract tens. Review these skills with your students at home! They bring home math work from class almost daily. You can see how well they have mastered the information if they are able to explain the processes to you!
