IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We are on the downhill slope of first grade! If we counted correctly, there are about 37 days left of first grade. It's amazing how fast school is winding down. Bring your planner and folder daily to school! FIELD TRIP UPDATE: Parents, THANK YOU so much for your willingness to volunteer. We are still waiting on confirmation for the new date of the field trip but as soon as we have it, we will let you know. We have ALL the volunteers we can take with us. One of us will let you know if you will be riding the bus with us but it looks as if we are going to have to say "sorry" to a few of you. If you still want to come to the field trip, you can meet us down there and pay for yourself. Ms. Terry has taken and numbered the volunteers in the order that they came in. Volunteering: There are open slots to volunteer in Ms. Terry's room! The story is about a boy and his dog who go to their neighbor's house. The neighbor's house is "scary" looking and the boy and his dog find out what Mrs. Hopper is REALLY like. This story is a realistic fiction story. We, as a class, will be talking about the items we treasure at home and how we can share them with our neighbors. We will be working on cause and effect. This week, our phonics focus is on suffixes as will as the vowel sound oo (like MOON). We are just diving right in! :) Our Spelling Words: slowly, careful, quickly, useful, painful, sadly, gladly, nicely, wonderful, playful, across** and because** Challenge words: happily, hopefully, perfectly, thoughtful, ungrateful Chinese: Last week students began the first literacy unit of second grade! The characters we are learning will be reviewed and practiced in various contexts and stories for 3 weeks--we are now in week two for these new target characters which are: 我 (I/my), 你 (you), 们 (plural noun marker), 可以 (can/able to), 好 (good/excellent). Math: Students began unit 12 in math last week and we will continue working on it this week. We are practicing measuring lengths. Science and Social Studies: We will be starting a unit on butterflies soon and will even have the opportunity to watch butterflies grow in our own classroom! In preparation for this unit, we are reviewing what we have already learned about animals and environments, and will continue to build on that knowledge! Chinese Summer Camp: The University of Utah’s Confucius Institute is hosting an intensive, week-long Chinese summer camp in July at several locations, including Ridgecrest! Students will participate in a two hour language class in the morning, and receive a cultural lesson in the afternoon with guest teachers from China. Dual immersion students who will be in 2nd through 8th grade this coming school year are welcome to enroll! (Ms. Mack has applied to teach the second grade section at Ridgecrest—fingers crossed!).
