你好 DLI families! Our countdown is drawing to a swift close--after today, there are only 9 days of school until we head home for winter break.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION (there's a lot of it--buckle up!) School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! Bring your folder daily to school! Ms. Mack is in need of volunteers to staple math pages in her class! It also allows for parents to see how a Chinese classroom works even though you may not have any Chinese language skills! Here is the sign up for Ms. Terry’s classroom: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer Please note that if your student is not in her classroom at the time, you are still able to volunteer and help with the other class in the room! Attendance: We are still struggling to earn pieces of our Mr. Potato Head. Please make a concerted effort to have your student here each day on time. Once the Mr. Potato head guy is completed, the students will earn an incentive that they picked out! They are incredibly motivated but we need the extra help! sing, Sing, SING! Christmas Sing Along for parents: Monday December 16th. K-2 from 2:00-2:30, and 3-5 from 2:30-3:00. Student Holiday Sing Along: Friday, December 20th from 9:00-10:00. Holiday Party for first graders will be on December 20th from 12:30PM to 1:30PM. We do not have the sign up sheet yet. When we get it, we will send it out! J Winter break dates: Monday December 23rd-Monday January 6th. School resumes on Wednesday January 6th, 2020, which is an A day (purple class will start with Ms. Terry, and green class will start with Ms. Mack!) *** REMINDER: Starting January 13th, students will no longer be allowed to speak English in the Chinese classroom....! We are happy to report that these first graders are already speaking in full sentences in Chinese, and are eager to use as much of the language as they can (in fact, they often jabber away in Chinese to Ms. Terry!). Please support your student by encouraging informal Chinese practice over the break to help them make a smooth transition when we come back in January. We know that family support goes a long way in helping these awesome first graders to develop the confidence and positive attitude necessary to be successful participants in the DLI program. We are immensely proud of their progress so far and are excited to see continued growth. LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Pizza Munchable, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Wednesday: Holiday Dinner: Beef Pot Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Brown Gravy, & a Whole Wheat Roll Thursday: Dutch Waffle, Chicken Nuggets, or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Ripper, Bean and Cheese Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Whole Grain Soft Pretzel, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Chicken Noodle Soup, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: This week, we are reading a story titled "Honey Bees." It is an informational text. We will be working on the long /e/ sound as well as two syllable word (cv/vc) patterns . We will continue talking about singular and plural nouns. After learning about the 3 sounds of -/ed/, we are going to continue practicing that phonics skill because it was a struggle and many of us wanted to spell the words with either a /t/, /id/ or /d/ instead of doing the -ed pattern. (example: wantid, workt). We are continuing to talk about author's purpose and using our inference skills to draw conclusions about why the author may say something. CHINESE: This week we will be reading and discussing two stories titled, "Whose Shoe Is This?" and "Who Has Something To Share?" These stories will help students recognize and contextualize the following new characters which they will practice reading and writing: 马(horse), 牛(cow), 鸟(bird), 羊(sheep), 虫(insect/bug). Students will practice key phrases including "Is this your ....?", "No, it's not mine. Go ask ....", "Where is my....?", "It's here/It's not here." In connection with one of our stories this week, students will be allowed to bring ONE SMALL SHOW-AND-TELL item to school on FRIDAY DECEMBER 14th. The item MUST be small enough to fit inside their backpack. Delicate, expensive, or otherwise valuable objects should be left at home as items sometimes get left at school, mishandled or misplaced. MATH: Students have been working hard analyzing and interpreting data, and we are now ready to move on to unit 7: Extend the Counting Sequence. Students will be learning strategies to count beyond 100. These strategies include counting by 10s, counting on a number chart to 120, and counting on an open number line. Encourage your child to share what they are learning in school, and especially to demonstrate that knowledge with as much Chinese as they can! SOCIAL STUDIES: Students have been practicing describing the four seasons. We will continue to work on the four seasons, as well as learning about different types of weather in each season, and review school vocabulary. We are so close to a highly deserved break--let's have a strong finish! Thank you for your continued support. Your students continue to amaze us.
