In both the green and purple classes, this is still a struggle. Please reinforce the "Chinese only" policy at home and encourage your child to speak as much Chinese as possible when they are in Chinese class. You can look on Dojo to monitor your child's progress. We know the students are capable of so much and are eager to help them continue progress in their Chinese language development! Chinese New Year: We are excited to invite you and your families to attend the Ridgecrest Elementary Chinese New Year celebration THIS Thursday February 22nd! The event will be held at the school that evening from 6:00-8:00 pm. Families are encouraged to attend and participate in fun Chinese crafts and activities, eat Chinese food, and best of all: watch your students perform! Students will be performing at 7:00 and will need to be in the gym by 6:45 to get lined up and ready to sing. Each grade level will perform a song, and then all the dual immersion students will sing one song together. If your child already owns traditional Chinese clothing, they are welcome to wear it to the event. If not, we are asking dual immersion students to wear yellow and red, which are auspicious colors in Chinese culture. We are NOT requiring anyone to purchase special clothing for this event. Formal invitations were sent out last week. ☺ Chinese Names A handful of students who already have Chinese names have started going by them at school, and this has made everyone else anxious and excited to get their own Chinese name! Ms. Mack has started the process of selecting an authentic Chinese name for each student, but she needs your help! If your child already has a Chinese name, please send it to Ms. Mack via email, Dojo, or written on a piece of paper. If you are able to include the characters and the pinyin, that would be excellent. If your first grader has older siblings in the immersion program, Ms. Mack needs their Chinese names as well so she can make sure she gives your first grader the same surname, and does not repeat other characters in the names. If you are unable to provide the Chinese names of your older immersion students, please send in their English name, and the name of their Chinese teacher. The sooner this information is sent in, the sooner Ms. Mack can get the names prepared and handed out to the kids! We will have a special naming ceremony for the kids to help them get excited about their Chinese names. WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: We are extending last week's reading street focus. We want to make sure we've mastered the skills! CHINESE: We are wrapping up unit 8 in Mandarin Matrix this week. Students will review the stories called "Staying At Home" and "Where Is Little Mountain Goat?" These two stories will reinforce the characters students have been practicing: today 今, is/are/am 是, yesterday 昨, tomorrow 明. We will be reinforcing the following key language features: “Don’t want to….”, “Today is…”, “Yesterday was…”, “Tomorrow is…”, “….and….draw together/watch a movie together”, “…will or will not…”, “…can go…”, “Do you want to…or not?”, “Where is …?”, “Is…at…?”. MATH: We are working on unit 10 this week which focuses on "Using models and strategies to add tens and ones". SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES: In science and social studies, students will continue to learn about Chinese New Year traditions, activities, and symbolism. We will also have a lesson about rocks and soil!
