We are sending our final edit of our book in next week so you still have the opportunity to purchase a book, if you would like! *** REMINDER: As of January 15th, students are no longer allowed to speak English in the Chinese classroom! In both the green and purple classes, this is still a struggle. Please reinforce the "Chinese only" policy at home and encourage your child to speak as much Chinese as possible when they are in Chinese class. You can look on Dojo to monitor your child's progress. We know the students are capable of so much and are eager to help them continue progress in their Chinese language development! Chinese Names A handful of students who already have Chinese names have started going by them at school, and this has made everyone else anxious and excited to get their own Chinese name! Ms. Mack has started the process of selecting an authentic Chinese name for each student, but she needs your help! If your child already has a Chinese name, please send it to Ms. Mack via email, Dojo, or written on a piece of paper. If you are able to include the characters and the pinyin, that would be excellent. If your first grader has older siblings in the immersion program, Ms. Mack needs their Chinese names as well so she can make sure she gives your first grader the same surname, and does not repeat other characters in the names. If you are unable to provide the Chinese names of your older immersion students, please send in their English name, and the name of their Chinese teacher. The sooner this information is sent in, the sooner Ms. Mack can get the names prepared and handed out to the kids! We will have a special naming ceremony for the kids to help them get excited about their Chinese names. WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: We are on Unit 4 Week 2. The story is Cinderella! We are focusing on recognizing the theme of the story as well as learning about fairy tales. We will be focusing on the diagraph /ea/ in words like beach and ease. We will also be talking about how a story can be a treasure. This weekly question is going to be a fun one as we are working on our class books! We will continue to talk about adjectives. We are making great strides in Lexia and both classes are doing extremely well on meeting their minutes! Great job, First Graders! :) CHINESE: Students will be starting a new unit and learning the new characters for unit 10. Students will reading a new story. This story will introduce some new characters for unit 10! We will be reinforcing some new key language features. More information to come later this week!
