The summer countdown continues: there are only 17 days of school left! The last few weeks of school are packed with activities so please refer to the blog and Mrs. Winfree’s Ridgecrest Roar to stay on top of all our upcoming events.
A note about warm weather: the cool spring weather seems to have vanished overnight and we are now enjoying much warmer days! Please remind your student to drink plenty of water during the day and to dress appropriately for the sudden change in temperature. Applying sunscreen before school is encouraged since students spend quite a bit of time outside for recess and other class activities. Students are also welcome to bring their own water bottles from home and keep them at their desks. Bring your planner and folder daily to school! We are having MANY students who are simply “forgetting” their planner at home. Please help them remember to bring it daily. FIELD TRIP UPDATE: The first grade field trip is TOMORROW! We will be heading to the museum at Thanksgiving Point on May 15th! If you are planning on meeting us at the museum, you are still required to sign up as a volunteer through Canyons School District. Here is the link: https://foundation.canyonsdistrict.org/index.php/volunteer. Volunteers who are meeting the first grade classes at the museum will need to arrange their own travel to and from the museum and will have to pay for their own entrance. We will ensure that parents or family volunteers will be in the same group as their students. We can’t wait for our great adventure! Please remember your student’s lunch choice and help them remember! ;) We are so excited! Keep your eyes posted for pictures on class dojo! HOMEWORK: There will not be any homework THIS week. Today (Monday) is a planning day for the first grade teachers and Ms. Mack will be gone on Friday presenting at a conference! We are so proud of Ms. Mack! VOLUNTEERING: There are open slots to volunteer in Ms. Terry's room! The question of the week is “How can a great idea make our lives easier?” We will be studying main idea and details. We will be working on summarizing. We will be learning about the suffixes -er and -or. We will also be learning (and our spelling focus) will be on dipthongs oi and oy. Spelling Words: oil, soil, voice, point, boy, boil, coin, oink, oy, join, against** and heavy**. Chinese: Students are continuing to work on the second unit of second grade material! The characters we are focusing on in unit 2 are: 朋友(friend), 的(possessive particle), 哪 (how/which/where), 这 (this/these), 吗 (question particle for "yes-no" questions). This week, students will begin our final unit for Chinese literacy! The focus characters for unit 3 are: 要 (to want/must), 面 (face, side), 他 (he, him), 她 (she, her), 玩 (to play, to have fun), 跟 (with). This week we will read a story called "Playing in the Water" ("玩水"). Math: We are still working on mastering topic 14, learning about 2D and 3 D shapes. Topic 15 is approaching quickly and we will be learning about equal shares of circles and rectangles. Science and Social Studies: Students are continuing to learn about sports and exercise this week, and will also learn about parts of the body and eating healthy! Chinese Summer Camp: The University of Utah’s Confucius Institute is hosting an intensive, week-long Chinese summer camp in July at several locations, including Ridgecrest! Students will participate in a two hour language class in the morning, and receive a cultural lesson in the afternoon with guest teachers from China. Dual immersion students who will be in 2nd through 8th grade this coming school year are welcome to enroll! (Ms. Mack has applied to teach the second grade section at Ridgecrest—fingers crossed!). Ms. Mack I went to the wrong room to volunteer on April 30. I'm sorry. If you need help before school is out, I'd love to volunteer.
