IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The weeks are flying by as we approach the end of the school year—we can’t believe there are only 21 days of school left! The last few weeks of school are packed with activities so please refer to the blog and Mrs. Winfree’s Ridgecrest Roar to stay on top of all our upcoming events. Spring Choir Concert: On Thursday afternoon at 2:30, we will have the pleasure of listening to our Ridgecrest’s own choir perform their spring concert! Family/Student Appreciation: We were overwhelmed by the generosity of students and families for teacher appreciation week. Ms. Terry and Ms. Mack have felt incredibly supported from the beginning of the school year, but wanted to thank you all especially for the incredible display of kindness and appreciation last week. Thank you for your thoughtful words, gifts, the smiles, hugs, and gestures of gratitude. We feel truly blessed to be working with your students and are forever grateful for your ongoing support. THANK YOU for being who you are, and for enabling us to be better teachers with your enthusiastic support at school and at home! It is such an honor to work with your students. We love and appreciate you! A note about warm weather: the cool spring weather seems to have vanished overnight and we are now enjoying much warmer days! Please remind your student to drink plenty of water during the day and to dress appropriately for the sudden change in temperature. Applying sunscreen before school is encouraged since students spend quite a bit of time outside for recess and other class activities. Students are also welcome to bring their own water bottles from home and keep them at their desks. Bring your planner and folder daily to school! We are having MANY students who are simply “forgetting” their planner at home. Please help them remember to bring it daily. FIELD TRIP UPDATE: The first grade field trip is just around the corner! We will be heading to the museum at Thanksgiving Point on May 15th (next Tuesday!). If you are planning on meeting us at the museum, you are still required to sign up as a volunteer through Canyons School District. Here is the link: https://foundation.canyonsdistrict.org/index.php/volunteer. Volunteers who are meeting the first grade classes at the museum will need to arrange their own travel to and from the museum and will have to pay for their own entrance. We will ensure that parents or family volunteers will be in the same group as their students. We can’t wait for our great adventure! HOMEWORK: Homework will be sent home on Tuesday this week. There will not be any homework next week as Monday is a planning day for first grade teachers and we will have substitutes, students and teachers attend the field trip on Tuesday, and Ms. Mack will be presenting at the National Chinese Language Conference on Friday (yay!). VOLUNTEERING: There are open slots to volunteer in Ms. Terry's room! Here is the link if you want to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-volunteer Ms. Mack also has open slots for volunteering! Here's her link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ba9ac2ba7fd0-help LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Whole Grain Soft Pretzel, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Chicken Enchiladas, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Wednesday: Country Fried Steak, Cheesy Nachos, or WowButter and Jelly Sandwich Thursday: Spaghetti, Crispy Chicken Sandwich (spicy or regular), or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Rippers, Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Breakfast Burrito, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: ELA: This week our story is titled “Dot and Jabber and the Great Acorn Mystery.” The question of the week is: How can we solve mysteries? In phonics, we are going to be studying the /oo/ sound (as in “foot”), and practicing the -ed, -es, -ing endings. Students will practice using the pronouns “me” and “I” appropriately (“I” is used before the verb and “me” is used after the verb). Chinese: Students are continuing to work on the second unit of second grade material! The characters we will focus on in unit 2 (for the next two and a half weeks) are: 朋友(friend), 的(possessive particle), 哪 (how/which/where), 这 (this/these), 吗 (question particle for "yes-no" questions). Math: We wrapped up our unit on telling time to the hour and half hour last week, and are now diving into unit 14 which explores shapes! Science and Social Studies: Our butterflies have emerged from their cocoons and are fluttering energetically around their enclosures! On Thursday, purple and green class will combine for the release of our beautiful Painted Lady butterflies! We are starting to learn vocabulary for sports and exercise. On Friday, your student is welcome to bring a picture of their favorite sport or exercise, or a physical object representing that sport to share with the class. The item must fit inside students’ backpacks! Students are not required to bring anything, and are still welcome to talk about their favorite sport or activity. Chinese Summer Camp: The University of Utah’s Confucius Institute is hosting an intensive, week-long Chinese summer camp in July at several locations, including Ridgecrest! Students will participate in a two hour language class in the morning, and receive a cultural lesson in the afternoon with guest teachers from China. Dual immersion students who will be in 2nd through 8th grade this coming school year are welcome to enroll! (Ms. Mack has applied to teach the second grade section at Ridgecrest—fingers crossed!).
