Welcome to a "regular" schedule week! We have brainboosters on Tuesday and Wednesday!
We are having a "Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving Feast" on November 21st! Parents, please help make this possible by sending in "Charlie Brown" like food items. Ideas: Toast (bread), Popped Popcorn, Pretzels, Jelly Beans, Cherries, etc! We have napkins and plates already provided! We are excited for this activity! We are also going to be talking about manners during this feast! The students will even be learning manner words in Chinese! It will be a wonderful time! Please send donations in sooner than later! Thank you to all those who have responded to our survey! We are no longer going to be sending homework home. We ask that if you would like homework sent home, please contact us and we will make a generic packet that is not scaffolded and is completely optional. Homework has not and was never a "must do" and we have always asked that each family adapt, simplify and/or challenge your student as needed. IMPORTANT INFORMATION School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! Bring your planner and folder daily to school! Please contact Ms. Terry if Lexia is still not working for you. We have another option for logging on if the "clever badges" continue to have problems! Thank you to all those who are having their students do lexia at home! NEEDED: Parents, we are out of black skinny expo markers! If any are willing to donate some to our classroom, that would be greatly appreciated! We know it's not easy to find black skinny expo markers so any dry erase markers would be greatly appreciated! LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, or Grill Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Chicken Tortilla Soup, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Wednesday: Thanksgiving Menu (Oven Roasted Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Chicken Gravy, Stuffing) Thursday: Orange Chicken, Chicken Nuggets, or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Rippers, Bean and Cheese Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Walking Taco, Hamburger, or Grill Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Pork Chop, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: Our story is called “The Farmer In The Hat” The story is a realistic fiction story. Our comprehension skills that we will be working on are recognizing cause and effect. We will be focusing on how schools are like a community. Our phonics focus will be long a: a_e (ex: name). We also will be focusing and learning about soft c and g sounds. We will be writing about things that we are thankful for and learning about proper nouns! CHINESE: Students are continuing Unit 4 of Mandarin Matrix. Students will review the stories "Little Firefighters" and "Ant Guard." We will read a new story called "Monkeys Go On An Outing." Students will practice key phrases including "Here", "there", "none", "is there any?", "where is/are?", and "the most." Students will be able to read and write the characters "mountain," "person," "water", and "fire." They will continue to reinforce "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在 (at/in), 里 (inside)," and we will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). MATH: We are finishing unit 4 this week and starting unit 5. Unit 5 is combining what students learned in units 3 and 4 and developing subtraction and addition strategies even further. This unit will continue to reinforce the relationship between addition and subtraction. Some have stated that math is too easy for their child. Please remember that the "skill" of doing the math problems may be easy but they are learning how to talk about each math problem in Chinese. They are talking about the steps they did to solve the problem, the solution and even different ways that some may have gotten the sum or difference. While basic math skills are fundamental, the students are diving in and applying each math skill they know, building upon it as well as increasing their Chinese vocabulary. Please help reinforce the importance of what we are doing each day! One way to help improve the connection to what they are doing at school to home is to continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! We are so proud of the hard work we are seeing from students in both English and Chinese classes. Keep up the awesome job, first graders!

Cael will be on vacation November27. Could you please send him with homework for that day. Also, I like the homework espically if it is optional . It helps me know what he is working on and reinforcing it at home. So please send it. I need it. You are doing a tremendous job.
