Good evening! Welcome back to school! The countdown until winter break is upon us! We have (after today) 16 school days until winter break. We have 3 full weeks and then a 2-day week, similar schedule to our Thanksgiving break week.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! Bring your planner and folder daily to school! Please contact Ms. Terry if Lexia is still not working for you. We have another option for logging on if the "clever badges" continue to have problems! Thank you to all those who are having their students do lexia at home! Thank you to all those who donated black and/or color dry erase markers! We appreciate your donations, and the kiddos are especially grateful! LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Corn Dog, Hamburger, or Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Chili, Mini Corn Dogs, or Chef Salad Wednesday: French Toast Sticks, Cheesy Nachos, Tuna Sandwich Thursday: Crunchy Fish Filet, Chicken Nuggets, or Taco Salad Friday: Pizza Rippers, Bean and Cheese Burrito, or Turkey Sandwich WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: This week, we are reading a story titled “Who Works Here?” It is an expository text. We will be using this text as well as other texts to talk and learn about author’s purpose. We will also be talking about who works to make our community a nice place. We will be talking about the community we live in, our school community and even our family community. Our phonics focus for the week is consonant digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph. We will also be learning the i_e pattern. Our conventions focus is special titles. We have started writing more each day! CHINESE: Today students started unit 5 of our Mandarin Matrix series. We will be reading and discussing two stories this week entitled, "Whose Shoe Is This?" and "Who Has Something To Share?" These stories will help students recognize and contextualize the following new characters which they will practice reading and writing: 马(horse), 牛(cow), 鸟(bird), 羊(sheep), 虫(insect/bug). Students will practice key phrases including "Is this your ....?", "No, it's not mine. Go ask ....", "Where is my....?", "It's here/It's not here." MATH: This week we will wrap up unit 5, and students will continue to practice new addition and subtraction strategies. As we begin unit 6, students will begin organizing and interpreting data. Some have stated that math is too easy for their child. Please remember that the "skill" of doing the math problems may be easy but they are learning how to talk about each math problem in Chinese. They are talking about the steps they did to solve the problem, the solution and even different ways that some may have gotten the sum or difference. While basic math skills are fundamental, the students are diving in and applying each math skill they know, building upon it as well as increasing their Chinese vocabulary. Please help reinforce the importance of what we are doing each day! One way to help improve the connection to what they are doing at school to home is to continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Students have been practicing describing the four seasons. We will continue to work on the four seasons, as well as learning about different types of weather in each season, and review school vocabulary. We are so glad to be back and working with your amazing students. Let's make it a wonderful first week back to school, first graders!
