It is a literary nonfiction story. Our question of the week is: "What can we learn about wild animals by watching them?" Our focus in phonics is the short "u" sound and final consonant blends. We will also be talking about cause and effect. CHINESE: Students are beginning Unit 3 of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read two new stories called "Amusement Park," and "Haircut." Students will practice new phrases including "Where is....?," "Who wants to sit here?," "He/she is sitting," "He/she isn't sitting," etc. Students will be able to read and write the characters "不 (no/not), 坐 (sit), 在(at/in), 里 (inside)," and we will continue to reinforce the characters for numbers 1-10, as well as the characters for big (大), little (小), on top of (上), and underneath (下). MATH: Continuing our work in unit 2, students will learn strategies to help them do addition and subtraction using numbers from 1-20. Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: We will have English and Chinese reading fluency, beat the clock, spelling practice, Chinese character writing practice, and reading for 10 minutes. Please let us know if you have any questions! Please remember to adapt the homework if needed. If it needs to be more challenging, use the same procedure and use a more advanced text! 1. Student reads the entire passage to him/herself. 2. Students reads aloud the passage to the adult/parent, who is timing them for exactly ONE minute. During this time, the parent is also keeping track of (counting up) any errors the child makes while reading, BUT does NOT try to correct the child at this time. 3. Adult/Parent counts all the words read in ONE minute, then subtracts the amount student got incorrect and the difference is the words per minute. For example: I read 53 words TOTAL including all the errors I made and I made 6 errors throughout the passage. My “parent” would take 53 words minus 6 which equals 47 words per minute. (53-6=47) Our Winter goal is for oral reading fluency is 24+ words in 1 minute with accuracy of 75%. We're excited to dive back into school this week. Welcome back, first graders :)
