We will be talking about the main idea and important ideas of the story. On Monday, we had an amazing discussion about habitats and even which animals hatch out of an egg. We even talked about what animals need to survive and what we need to survive. The students were amazing with our discussion! We will be working on our short /e/ as well as initial consonant blends. We learned a new small group station on Monday. We are using play-doh to spell our spelling words as well as other words that follow the same pattern. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday. We have been doing 3 of the challenge words as well as one of the dictation sentences. Everyone is attempting to do them but they are not counting against the student's demonstration of mastering the phonics skill of the week. We will also be working on writing poems. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We are learning more stations for our skill based instruction. We also are talking about interrogative sentences. CHINESE: This week students are in their 2nd unit of Mandarin Matrix. Students will read two new stories this week focusing on the language features: "where is _______?", " is on top of ", " is underneath ". Students will review previously learned vocabulary (big, little, on top of, underneath, sheep, cow, bird, apple, dad, older brother, older sister, younger sister), and learn the following new vocabulary words: chair, apple tree, worm, birthday, They will be reviewing and practicing, apple tree, insects, bird, big, and little. We will continue to practice the Chinese characters for numbers 1-10. Students have some writing practice sent home this week as part of the weekly homework so that they can continue to develop their writing skills. Special instructions for parents have been sent home to help you guide your student in writing Chinese even if you have never studied the language before! Students will continue to review topics introduced at the beginning of the school year (family, friends, animals, clothing, animals, and colors). The students are also continuing to learn about school communities, focusing on people and their roles, places, and things inside schools. MATH: This week students continue with unit 2 which covers addition and subtraction strategies when working with numbers from 1-20. Please continue to practice math fluency at home and ask your child to practice talking to you about math in Chinese! HOMEWORK: We will have reading fluency, beat the clock, spelling practice and read for 10 minutes. This week, we added Chinese homework. Please let us know if you have any questions! Please remember to adapt the homework if needed. If it needs to be more challenging, use the same procedure and use a more advanced text! 1. Student reads the entire passage to him/herself. 2. Students reads aloud the passage to the adult/parent, who is timing them for exactly ONE minute. During this time, the parent is also keeping track of (counting up) any errors the child makes while reading, BUT does NOT try to correct the child at this time. 3. Adult/Parent counts all the words read in ONE minute, then subtracts the amount student got incorrect and the difference is the words per minute. For example: I read 53 words TOTAL including all the errors I made and I made 6 errors throughout the passage. My “parent” would take 53 words minus 6 which equals 47 words per minute. (53-6=47) Our Winter goal is for oral reading fluency is 24+ words in 1 minute with accuracy of 75%. It’s going to be a great week!! Way to go, First Graders! We are so proud of all your hard work!
