WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: ! Our question of the week is "How do animals help people?" Our story is titled "The Big Blue Ox" It is an animal fantasy story. We will be talking about the characters and setting of the story. We will be working on being able to visualize what is happening in the story. We will be working on our short /o/ sound as well the plural -s and consonant s /z/. A spelling list will be coming home with your child on Monday! We have been doing 3 of the challenge words as well as one of the dictation sentences! Everyone is attempting to do them but they are not counting against the student's demonstration of mastering the phonics skill of the week. We will also be working on writing complete sentences and being able to identify the predicates of sentences. We are still working on remembering our capital letters at the beginning and our punctuation at the end. We are learning more stations for our skill based instruction. This week, we will continue to be working on buddy reading and adding additional stations to the routine! We have added using our 9 classroom iPads to the rotation. CHINESE: This week, students are reviewing the topics covered in the first five weeks of school: family, friends, animals, clothing, and colors. Students will continue to focus on talking about animals they like and do not like, as well as what animals need and where they live. We are also moving into our first writing unit which has 3 stories in it! We hope your students will feel confident and optimistic as they start to develop their writing skills. A note from Ms. Terry---They are doing amazing and learning so much! It is amazing to see them answering questions about which animal is what! We've been able to combine for a couple of minutes before brainboosters and I am truly impressed with what they understanding and learning! MATH: We are still working on topic 1 in math which is addition and subtraction problems to 10. The students are making great strides in counting to 10 in Chinese as well as recognizing math vocabulary in Chinese. We will also be reviewing and moving into topic 2 which is expanding on their understanding of addition and subtraction! HOMEWORK: We will have reading fluency, beat the clock, spelling practice and read for 10 minutes. Please remember to adapt the homework if needed. If it needs to be more challenging, use the same procedure and use a more advanced text!
For example: I read 53 words TOTAL including all the errors I made and I made 6 errors throughout the passage. My “parent” would take 53 words minus 6 which equals 47 words per minute. (53-6=47) Our Winter goal is for oral reading fluency is 24+ words in 1 minute with accuracy of 75%. Here’s to an awesome week!
