IMPORTANT INFORMATION
School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! On Fridays, we get out of school at 1:40! Bring your folder daily to school! EVERY FRIDAY IS TIGER PRIDE DAY! Wear your tiger pride (or blue & orange if you haven’t received your 2019-20 school t-shirt yet)!!! Hands to self: In order to make our classrooms a safe and comfortable environment for all students, we teach students to follow our school rules of respect, responsibility, and safety by keeping their hands to themselves. This is a skill that all first graders need to work on, but we have noticed that it has been a particularly big struggle these first few weeks of school. Ms. Terry and Ms. Mack will usually not mark students down on Dojo until after several reminders have been given, but even so we are having to monitor, remind, and reteach students daily to keep their bodies in their own space. We have told students that if they continue to need many reminders, we will be contacting parents so that the positive behaviors can be reinforced at home as well. Thank you for supporting our school rules and for promoting a safe and comfortable classroom environment by practicing these social skills with your students! Toys at school: Several students have been bringing toys to school which is causing a bit of a distraction. If students are playing with toys in class, the toys will be kept at the teacher's desk until the end of the day. We discourage students from bringing toys to school because items frequently get misplaced or lost. Please remind your students to keep toys at home! Please also remind your students that if they have phone watches that they are not allowed to be texting or calling on them during the day. Thank you. Volunteering: Ms. Terry will send out a volunteer sign up in the coming weeks. Ms. Mack has already had some parents come to her room to staple and assemble math pages. Thanks to those who have reached out and are willing to come in! If anyone is interested in coming to help staple and sort math pages over the next couple of months, please email Ms. Mack! ([email protected]) Remember that if you are volunteering at the school, you must fill out a volunteer application at: volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org Class Dojo: Thanks to all those who have signed up for Class Dojo! If you don't have your child's code, please let us know. It's a quick and fun way to see how your student is doing and even get some pictures here and there! If you look at your child's student report, you may see points awarded for positive behaviors or deducted for undesirable behaviors. Fundraiser: Keep up the great work! This is our one and only fundraiser! Please do your best to share it with family, friends and neighbors (that you know)! If 90% of first grade participates, we will have an extra recess with popsicles! The goal is that each student does their best and “raises” $50. Our overall goal for the school is $30,000. If we reach $30,000, all the students will have a chance to silly string Mrs. Winfree and Mrs. Brush (AKA Ms. Megan, our first grade aide)! Each day there are special “contests” going on, please check the Ridgecrest PTA Instagram account for details! * PLEASE ALSO NOTE * the PTA is not able to accept payments via Venmo although the fun run fundraiser packet says that you can. Friday (9/13) is the fun run. PLEASE send your student in tennis shoes and comfortable clothes! The fun run is a great time! Picture Day is on 9/17. Substitutes on 9/10: Ms. Terry and Ms. Mack will be at a half day training the morning of September 10th. Please let your students know that we will be back in the afternoon, and that they should treat the substitutes with the upmost respect. Parent Teacher Conferences are also coming up, so mark your calendars! Monday September 23rd from 9:00-3:30, Wednesday September 25th from 4:00-7:30, and Thursday September 26th from 9:00-12:00 and 2:00-7:30. Please check your student's backpack for a yellow sheet of instructions on how to sign up for conferences. Sign up as soon as you are able, as the time slots fill up quickly! LUNCH CHOICES Monday: Pulled Pork Sandwich, Hamburger, Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tuesday: Orange Chicken, Mini Corn Dogs and Chef Salad Wednesday: Canyons Chicken Bowl, Nachos or Wow Butter and Jelly Sandwich Thursday: Cheese Stuffed Ravioli, Crispy Chicken Sandwich (spicy or regular) and Taco Salad Friday: Cheese (or Pepperoni) Pizza, Bean Burrito or Turkey Sandwich Monday: Baked Potato, Hamburger, Grilled Cheese Sandwich WHAT WE ARE LEARNING ELA: We are starting our first week of Unit 1! We are going to be learning about the short /a/ sound as well as the final -ck in words and when to use it. We will be reading a story titled "Sam, Come Back!" We will be using our first grade journals for the first time this week. We will be working on complete sentences. Spelling words are coming home on Monday on yellow sheet of paper! :) CHINESE: We have been working on colors and articles of clothing all week and will continue to review them as we move on to animals. If students have pictures of family pets or want to print out a picture of their favorite animal to bring to school on Wednesday September 11th, we will use them for an in-class activity. Your students are getting so good at introducing family members! We love having the family pictures up in our classroom. If you still have not sent a picture in, please do so ASAP. MATH: For math homework this week, students will review addition and subtraction strategies (count on to add, doubles, near doubles, using a ten frame, adding in any order, counting back to subtract). Students will practice using addition to subtract and solving word problems with facts to 10. We are working to create additional challenges for students who are already very comfortable with basic addition and subtraction using numbers 1-10, but are emphasizing the development of students' abilities to talk about math in Chinese. Homework: The first homework is coming home on Monday September 9th. Please feel free to enrich the homework if you would like. If it is too difficult, be adapt as needed. If you would like homework, please contact Ms. Mack. Homework is usually sent home on Monday and can be returned on Friday for feedback. Students are not required to complete homework packets or even turn them in--that is entirely up to you! Here’s to an awesome week!

Welcome back after a long weekend! We hope everyone enjoyed the day off and that our first graders are ready to jump back in to school!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION Bring your folder daily to school! We are noticing that many students are forgetting to bring it. Even though we haven't had papers going home yet, the routine is important as we continue through the year! School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! On Fridays, school is out at 1:40! We had some tears last week about not having show-and-tell. We will not be starting show-and-tell until later in the year, but we will be sure to let the students and you know when we will be starting it. Keep reading the blog to stay posted! Mrs. Winfree has also reminded all the students that school is not a place for toys, even if it is in the students’ backpack. She has asked the teachers that if we see any toys that we keep them until the end of the day and possibly even reach out to parents to come pick up the toy. Volunteering: We are working on getting a volunteer schedule/calendar out! Thanks to those who have contacted us about coming in to help out. Remember that if you are volunteering at the school, you must fill out a volunteer application at: volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org Class Dojo: Remember to sign up for Class Dojo! If you don't have your child's code, please let us know. It's a quick and fun way to see how your student is doing and even get some pictures here and there! The two weeks of school we have emphasized positive behavior reinforcement primarily through the Class Dojo app. This week we will be improving undesirable behaviors through the Class Dojo app. If you look at your child's student report, you may see points awarded for positive behaviors or deducted for undesirable behaviors. Fun Run: Information regarding the fun run is coming home on Tuesday :) PLEASE SEND BACK THE HALF SHEET ABOUT T-SHIRT SIZES ON WEDNESDAY. We appreciate the prompt return as does the PTA! Picture Day: Picture Day is on SEPTEMBER 17th! A note will be coming home about it soon! LUNCH CHOICES Monday: No School, LABOR DAY! We will continue to talk about realistic fiction. Our two questions will be "What can we do with our neighborhood friends?" and "What is around us at school?" We will be talking about short /o/ and short /e/. Our high frequency words that we will work on having committed to memory are: are, have, that, they, two, he, is, three, to, and with. We will be writing in our journals A LOT this week. We recognize that many students know pieces or even all of the review but due to the challenge of being in a Chinese speaking classroom, we are easing the cognitive load in the English side of the classroom for the rest of this week. Thank you for your support in this matter! :) CHINESE: Please send (or email) a family photo to school this week! This week students will learn and utilize vocabulary for colors, clothing/personal items, and friends. We will review vocabulary and sentence patterns from the previous week, emphasizing family members and practicing the sentence frames: "This is my...(mom, sister, brother, etc)." and "My family has (number) people." MATH: Students will work with various methods of addition and subtraction with numbers from 1-10. Students have done an amazing job remembering their numbers in Chinese and using them in our math practice problems last week. HOMEWORK: Reading 10 minutes a night. We will officially start “homework” on September 9th! Please contact Ms. Mack if you would like a homework packet! :) We had an amazing first week of school! Thank you for helping your student to be on time and prepared to learn each day. This is our first full week of school, and we know it is going to be awesome. Please continue to encourage and celebrate your student's successes--they are adjusting to a lot of newness, and we are proud of how quickly they are learning routines and how they are engaging with class materials.
If you have not done so already, please take TWO MINUTES to fill out the parent survey. Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3KQZZrjJcKAtTKCHgm-YpQcwfq7Nt_mhV2IuFKQ0YlCBidw/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1 Thank you to those who have already done this! :) Your responses are appreciated! :) IMPORTANT INFORMATION Bring your folder daily to school! We are noticing that many students are forgetting to bring it. Even though we haven't had papers going home yet, the routine is important as we continue through the year! School starts at 8:40 and gets out at 3:20. We will always enter and leave the building at the first grade doors! On Friday's, school is out at 1:40! No School on September 2nd. It's Labor Day! Our first book order has gone home. We plan to submit the order on September 6th! We are only doing online ordering this year. If you need our class code, please email Ms. Terry for it! Class Dojo: Thank you to the parents who have signed up for ClassDojo! It is the quickest and easiest way to get ahold of us. We do set quiet hours each night and on the weekends but we do check the app frequently! Toys at school: Several students have been bringing toys to school which is causing distractions. If students are playing with toys in class, the toys will be kept at the teacher's desk until the end of the day. We discourage students from bringing toys to school because items frequently get misplaced or lost. Please remind your students to keep toys at home! Volunteering in Ms. Mack's room: We have not yet officially sent out our online volunteer sign up link, but Ms. Mack is looking for volunteers to help assemble math packets according to the lessons in each unit. If you are interested in helping, you can come into class to assemble the pages. Remember that if you are volunteering at the school, you must fill out a volunteer application at: volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org Please contact Ms. Mack if you are interested in helping out (no Chinese required ;) )[email protected]. We will start “homework” on September 9th! WHAT WE ARE LEARNING THIS WEEK ELA: We are reading two stories titled “Tip and Tam" and "The Big Top." The text based comprehension skills we will be working on are recognizing the characters and the setting. We do not have spelling words until September 9th also. We will be reviewing our letters and sounds, blending simple CVC words and working on our station routine. CHINESE: This week we will continue to reinforce vocabulary for “big” and “little”, greetings (hello, goodbye), and responses to the question “How are you?” (good, very good, not good). Students will also continue practicing basic classroom phrases tied to our routines (line up, sit down, stand up, eyes on the teacher, etc.). In addition to reviewing and reinforcing these concepts, we will spend time practicing the grammar concepts of "on top" and "underneath"! For the next two weeks, students will learn vocabulary and grammar structures to talk about their families. Please send a family photo to school with your student that they can share with the class! The photos will also be on display in our classroom. MATH: Students are still learning the names of numbers 1-10 in Chinese. We will continue practicing vocabulary for daily calendar time, and will also begin practicing addition from 1-10. Please feel free to ask your student to practice saying their numbers at home! We are also noticing that many students need practice counting out loud. A great way to practice oral counting fluency at home is to help your student say their numbers in the car, while cleaning up, or getting ready to go to an activity. The summer countdown continues: there are only 8 days of school left! The last few weeks of school are packed with activities so please refer to the blog and Mrs. Winfree’s Ridgecrest Roar to stay on top of all our upcoming events.

Their growth is astounding and we are so honored to know this group of first grade dual immersion students! A note about sleep: We are having many students coming to school sleepy and tired. As a result, we are recognizing that those sleepy students are chattier, easily bored, and not as engaged in their learning. Please help your student get to bed on time so that their learning is maximized! FIELD TRIP UPDATE: The first grade field trip is coming up! The date is May 16th. We have had a lot of parents ask if they can meet us down there. The answer is: YES! We would love to have you meet us down there. If you are planning on meeting us at the museum, you are still required to sign up as a volunteer through Canyons School District. Here is the link: https://foundation.canyonsdistrict.org/index.php/volunteer. Volunteers who are meeting the first grade classes at the museum will need to arrange their own travel to and from the museum, and will have to pay for their own entrance. We will ensure that parents or family volunteers will be in the same group as their students.
